A Guide to the History of the Wheelchair

Star 2 - Self Propel Wheelchair

If you were to take a survey in regards to the most popular mobility aid currently on the market, the results would likely come back in favour of the wheelchair. Whilst at first glance this is a product which is relatively simple, the truth of the matter is that the wheelchair has undergone countless changes over its lifespan. Unfortunately, many individuals are ignorant as to what the roots of this unit is. Here at ISB Mobility, we believe that it is important for the history of the wheelchair to be published – if you would like to expand your understanding on this subject, feel free to continue reading.

Ancient Chinese Origins

Although it can be argued that these were not, by the traditional definition, ‘wheelchairs’, there is evidence to suggest that chairs affixed with wheels were used in ancient times. These may have perhaps been basic wheelbarrows which served a dual-purpose; not only could they be used to transport manual tools, but also people. The depictions that have been found on vases and slates are commonly perceived as proof that the wheelchair has a far richer heritage than first thought.

European Popularisation

As incredible as it may seem, wheelchairs are not thought to have arrived in Europe until over one thousand years later, at some point in the twelfth century. Once again, these are intricately linked with the wheelbarrow. However, independent wheelchairs that did not need to be pushed by another individual were not invented until 1655 – the mechanical mastery exhibited by the Germans allowed for rolling chairs to be manufactured. These manual wheelchairs were not so much considered to be mobility aids, but rather as a smooth-and-seamless way for the affluent members of society to easily traverse the world.

Twentieth Century Innovations

When people look back at history, it is widely acknowledged that the twentieth century was a time of technical innovation across the board. Thanks to the invention of tubular steel, it was now possible to create a wheelchair that was portable, and subsequently incredibly easy to use. Following on from this, the development of intricate electrical components allowed for a range of wheelchairs to be manufactured that did not force the user to use their own strength. Electric power is considered by most to be a turning point for these units, and certainly catapulted them into mainstream usage.

Modern Day Design

The technology that is available to us now in the twenty-first century means that we are able to innovate in ways never before thought possible. For example, designs have become incredibly streamlined – portability is now expected, and wheelchair users are able to enjoy a level of comfort rarely experienced in the past. The brakes which are now fitted are efficient-and-effective, meaning that safety has been somewhat consolidated. With a plethora of models available, such as ultra-lightweight and electric wheelchairs, 2020 is a time where convenience is epitomized.

Top Mobility Aids in Ireland Taking Off in 2025

Ireland’s mobility aid market is experiencing remarkable growth, driven by an aging population and advancing technology. With the number of people aged 65 and over projected to reach over 1 million by 2030, demand for mobility solutions has never been higher. Whether it’s regaining independence at home or exploring the outdoors with confidence, modern mobility aids are transforming lives across Ireland.

Mobility Scooters

Mobility scooters remain the quintessential mobility aid for outdoor independence. These versatile devices allow individuals who struggle with walking distances to navigate their communities without relying on others for assistance. Modern mobility scooters come in various configurations, from compact folding models perfect for shopping trips to robust four-wheel designs built for extended outdoor use.

The HSE provides free mobility scooters to eligible medical card holders through occupational therapist assessments, making these life-changing devices more accessible than ever. Additionally, the Mobility Allowance of €208.50 per month helps individuals aged 16-66 with mobility disabilities cover transport costs, including scooter maintenance and rental fees.

Riser Recliner Chairs

Riser recliner chairs have evolved significantly from traditional armchairs, incorporating sophisticated lifting mechanisms that help users sit down and stand up without physical strain. These electric-powered chairs feature memory foam cushioning, adjustable footrests, and smooth lifting technology that reduces stress on joints and muscles.

Single motor models control the backrest and footrest together, while dual motor variants offer independent adjustment of each component for personalized comfort. With customizable fabrics, finishes, and orthopedic support options, riser recliners blend seamlessly into modern Irish homes while providing essential mobility assistance.

Through Floor Lifts

Through floor lifts represent a premium mobility solution for multi-story homes, with the global stair lifts and climbing devices market projected to reach $8.2 billion by 2035. While installation requires structural modifications and typically takes two days to complete, the investment dramatically improves quality of life for individuals with significant mobility challenges.

Modern through floor lifts like the Elesse and VE models are powered by standard 13-amp sockets, operate quietly, and require minimal space—approximately 0.9 square meters. They comply with BS5900:2012 safety standards and can accommodate wheelchair users, making them ideal for aging in place. Many suppliers offer installment payment plans to make these systems more financially accessible.

Stairlifts

The stairlift market is experiencing robust growth, with global revenues projected to increase from $1.07 billion in 2025 to $1.67 billion by 2032 at a 6.6% annual growth rate. This surge reflects technological advancements including battery backup systems, smart sensors, and custom-fit rail technology that enhance safety and usability.

Whether your staircase is straight or curved, modern stairlifts can be seamlessly installed to match your home’s configuration. Battery-operated systems ensure functionality during power outages, while compact designs preserve stairway clearance for other household members.

The History of the Walker

Have you ever wondered when the first walker or rollator was invented?

We did some research and found out some very interesting facts!

A walker (walking frame) or rollator is a tool for anyone suffering from Arthritis, lower and mid back pain, muscle weakness, decreased stamina, deteriorating stamina regardless of their age.

Walkers started appearing in the early 1950’s. The first US patent was awarded in 1953 to William Cribbes Robb, of Stretford, UK, for a device called “walking aid”, which had been filed with the British patent office in August 1949. Two variants with wheels were both awarded US patents in May 1957, and the first non-wheeled design that was called a “walker” was patented in 1965 by Elmer F. Ries of Cincinnati, Ohio. The first walker to resemble modern walkers was patented in 1970 by Alfred A. Smith of Van Nuys, California.

Improve Mobility Around The Home: Top Ways for Better Access

woman on stairlift to improve mobility in home

Maintaining independence at home can be challenging for those with limited mobility. While public spaces have become increasingly accessible, many homes still lack the modifications needed for safe, comfortable living. Fortunately, several proven solutions can transform your home into a mobility-friendly environment.

Stairlifts: The Gold Standard for Home Accessibility

Stairlifts remain the most popular mobility solution for Irish homes, and for good reason. These systems provide safe, reliable access between floors without the physical strain of climbing stairs. Modern stairlifts come in two main configurations:

  • Straight stairlifts for standard staircases with no curves or landings
  • Curved stairlifts custom-designed to navigate bends, corners, and intermediate landings

Today’s models feature advanced safety sensors, comfortable seating, and smooth operation. Many include swivel seats and folding footrests for convenient access and space-saving when not in use.

Mobility Ramps for Easy Entry and Exit

Wheelchair users and those with walking frames often struggle with steps at doorways. A well-designed ramp eliminates this barrier, providing:

  • Independent access to your home
  • Easier assistance for carers
  • Safe entry for mobility scooters and wheelchairs
  • Improved access for deliveries and equipment

Ramps can be permanent installations or portable solutions depending on your needs and property type.

Level-Access Showers for Bathroom Safety

The bathroom poses significant risks for people with mobility challenges. Level-access showers remove dangerous thresholds and create a safe bathing environment. Key features include:

  • Zero-step entry for wheelchair access
  • Non-slip flooring to prevent falls
  • Strategically placed grab rails for stability
  • Optional shower chairs for seated bathing
  • Handheld shower heads for easier use

These modifications dramatically reduce fall risk while preserving dignity and independence.

Through-Floor Lifts for Multi-Story Access

For individuals who cannot use stairs at all, through-floor lifts provide the ultimate solution. These compact elevators:

  • Transport wheelchair users safely between floors
  • Require minimal structural modifications
  • Operate quietly and efficiently
  • Accommodate both users and carers
  • Blend seamlessly with home interiors

While representing a larger investment, through-floor lifts offer unmatched accessibility for those with severe mobility limitations.

Additional Home Modifications Worth Considering

  • Grab Rails and Support Bars: Install these throughout your home, particularly in bathrooms, hallways, and beside beds. They provide crucial stability for transfers and movement.
  • Raised Toilet Seats: These reduce the distance needed to sit and stand, making bathroom visits safer and easier.
  • Adjustable Beds: Electric profiling beds allow users to find comfortable positions independently, reducing strain on carers.
  • Wider Doorways: Consider widening doorways to at least 32 inches to accommodate wheelchairs and walking frames comfortably.
