Common Faults and What They Mean
A stairlift that stops is frightening for the person who depends on it and for the family. Most faults are one of a handful of things: a lift left off charge, a safety switch doing its job, a flat or worn battery, or a part that has reached the end of its life. The cards below describe the six problems we are called out to most, what usually causes each one, and what to check before you ring.

Stopped Mid-Travel
Usually a safety edge or sensor has been triggered by something on the stairs, the seat is not fully swivelled back and locked, or the batteries are low. Clear the stairs, lock the seat, lower the arms and try again. Still stuck? Call us.
Will Not Move, No Lights
Nearly always power. Check the charger plug at the wall socket, the key switch and the isolator, and whether a power cut left the lift off its charging point until the batteries went flat. If the socket is live and it still shows nothing, an engineer is needed.
Beeping or a Flashing Light
Most lifts beep when parked away from a charging point or when the batteries are low, and a flashing light or code on the display points to the fault. Park the lift at the top or bottom, note the code, and tell us what it says.
Slow, Jerky or Stops on One Section
Batteries wearing out, a rail that needs cleaning and lubricating, or a worn drive part. A lift that hesitates on the same stretch of rail every time is telling you something. Do not force it; book a service call.
Seat, Arm or Footplate Fault
A swivel that will not lock, a footplate that will not fold, or an arm switch that has stopped responding. The safety switches hold the lift until the fault is put right. Usually an adjustment or a small part.
Remote Handset Not Working
Start with the batteries in the handset, then check the lift is switched on. The call stations at the top and bottom of the stairs should still move the lift; if they do, the fault is in the handset, not the lift.
Servicing, Batteries and Obsolete Lifts
Keeping the Lift Running, and Knowing When to Replace It
Every stairlift we supply comes with a 24 month parts and labour guarantee, and when it ends we offer an extended maintenance contract. An annual service cleans and lubricates the rail, checks the batteries, brakes and safety edges, and catches worn parts before they leave someone stranded on the stairs.
Some lifts reach a point where parts are no longer made. When that happens we say so straight away and quote a replacement against the cost of the repair, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you. That quote is itemised for a council repair or adaptation grant application if you qualify, and a reconditioned straight lift from €1,200 is often the answer.
Annual Service
Rail cleaned and lubricated, batteries tested, brakes, seat and safety edges checked. The cheapest call-out you will ever book.
Battery Replacement
Stairlift batteries wear out. Slow travel, beeping at the charge point or a lift that dies in a power cut are the signs. Replaced on the visit.
Replacing an Obsolete Lift
When parts are no longer made we remove the old lift and fit a new or reconditioned one, often on the same visit, with the quote itemised for a grant.
Before You Call: Three Quick Checks
- Power. Is the charger plugged in and the wall socket switched on? Is the key switch on the lift turned on? Has there been a power cut, and was the lift left parked away from its charging point?
- Position. Are the stairs clear along the whole rail? Is the seat swivelled back to the travel position and locked, and are the arms and footplate down? The safety switches will not let the lift move otherwise.
- Details. Note any code or light on the display, whether it beeps, and the make and model from the label under the seat. Tell us those when you call and the engineer arrives with the right parts.
