Stairlift Installation

Irish Stairlifts & Bathrooms installs straight and curved stairlifts in homes across Dublin, Leinster and nationwide. Our engineers fit the lift, show you how to use it and take away all the packaging. This page explains how long stairlift installation takes, what happens on the day and what you need to have ready.

How Long Does Stairlift Installation Take?

Fitting a straight stairlift usually takes 2 to 3 hours. A curved stairlift takes about 4 to 5 hours. Every stairlift is fitted to the steps of your stairs, so there is no damage to your walls.

Straight Stairlift Installation

Straight stairlifts can often be installed within 24 to 48 hours of ordering, depending on availability. If you need one urgently, for example after a fall or before someone comes home from hospital, see our emergency stairlift installation service.

Curved Stairlift Installation

The Access BDD curved stairlift is custom made to the customer’s specifications and can take 4-5 weeks for delivery upon receipt of deposit. The installation process takes approx 4-5 hours.

The Platinum Curved Stairlift is also custom made to order and usually takes 3-5 weeks for delivery upon receipt of deposit. The installation process takes approx 4-5 hours.

Because the rail is made for your staircase, most of the wait for a curved stairlift is manufacturing time. In urgent cases we can ask for priority manufacturing.

The installation of our stairlifts takes between 1 and 5 hours, with very little disruption to your home. All our stairlifts are fitted to your steps so there is no damage or disruption to your walls. Once installed, you will be given a full demonstration by our engineers and you’ll also receive a full user manual. We will ensure you can use your stairlift with ease and confidence. All our engineers at Irish Stairlifts & Bathrooms are highly trained and experts within their fields. We understand how important your stairlift is and we always endeavour to arrange installation of our products as soon as they arrive from the manufacturers. Our engineers will remove any waste & packaging that may be involved with the installation of your new stairlift.

The Stairlift Installation Process, Step by Step

  1. Free home survey. We look at your staircase, measure it and talk through what you need.
  2. Your quote. You get a price for your stairs. A curved rail is made to order once the deposit is received.
  3. Installation day. The engineer fixes the rail to the stair treads, fits the chair and tests the lift.
  4. Demonstration. We show you how to use the stairlift until you are comfortable with it, and leave you the user manual.
  5. Tidy up. We remove all waste and packaging.
  6. After care. Our new stairlifts come with a 24 month parts and labour guarantee, and an engineer will call within 24 hours if there is a breakdown. See after care and warranty.

What You Need Before We Arrive

  • A plug socket near the stairs. A stairlift plugs into an ordinary socket near the top or bottom of the stairs. It does not need its own electrical circuit. The lift runs on rechargeable batteries that charge while it is parked, so it keeps working during a power cut.
  • Clear stairs and landings. Move anything stored on the stairs, and any furniture close to the top or bottom step.
  • The person who will use the lift. It helps if they are at home on the day, so the seat can be set up for them and they can try the lift with the engineer there.

Do Stairlifts Need Professional Installation?

Yes. A stairlift carries a person up and down a staircase, so the rail has to be fixed, levelled and tested properly, and the safety sensors and seat belt checked before anyone uses it. A stairlift fitted by our engineers is covered by our guarantee. If you are weighing it up, read Can I install a stair lift myself?

What Can Delay a Stairlift Installation?

  • Making a curved rail. A curved rail takes between 3 and 5 weeks to make from receipt of the deposit, depending on the model.
  • Waiting for grant approval. If you are applying for a Housing Adaptation Grant or a Mobility Aids Grant, wait for the council to approve it before the stairlift is fitted. See how to apply for a stairlift grant.
  • Stock. Straight stairlifts are usually available quickly, but installation within 24 to 48 hours depends on the model being in stock.
