The History of the Walker

Have you ever wondered when the first walker or rollator was invented?

We did some research and found out some very interesting facts!

A walker (walking frame) or rollator is a tool for anyone suffering from Arthritis, lower and mid back pain, muscle weakness, decreased stamina, deteriorating stamina regardless of their age.

Walkers started appearing in the early 1950’s. The first US patent was awarded in 1953 to William Cribbes Robb, of Stretford, UK, for a device called “walking aid”, which had been filed with the British patent office in August 1949. Two variants with wheels were both awarded US patents in May 1957, and the first non-wheeled design that was called a “walker” was patented in 1965 by Elmer F. Ries of Cincinnati, Ohio. The first walker to resemble modern walkers was patented in 1970 by Alfred A. Smith of Van Nuys, California.

The Most Popular Ways to Improve Mobility Around the Home

woman on stairlift to improve mobility in home

Individuals that do not have control over their limbs, and subsequently have trouble with their mobility, can find that life is considerably easier outside of the home than within. Whilst the market for traditional mobility aids, such as wheelchairs and scooters, has continued to grow, there has been somewhat of a stagnation in relation to those which offer assistance within the home. However, it is important to recognise that this does not mean that there are not some products which can offer help in fantastic ways. Thanks to our status as a leading supplier of mobility products, the team here at ISB Mobility have the experience required to guide you through some of these.

Install a Stairlift

If you were to conduct a survey in relation to what is the mobility aid most commonly found in the home, the results would most likely be in resounding favour of the stairlift. If you were previously unaware, these series of products are one of the best ways in which to secure independence for someone that faces challenges with their mobility. With curved and straight stairlifts available, there is an option to suit everyone.

Invest in a Ramp

For some individuals, one of the biggest challenges that is faced on a daily basis is the entering-and-exiting of the home; being confined to a wheelchair can make it extremely difficult to navigate steps, as well as large drops in general. Thankfully, there is a way in which to circumvent this issue, in the form of a mobility ramp. Not only can these prove to be invaluable for those afflicted with mobility-related issues, but they can be utilised to great effect by carers.

Create Level-Access Shower

As mentioned previously, independence is something which mobility-challenged individuals can struggle to have in their day-to-day lives. A prime example of this is in the bathroom – most ordinary rooms do not adequately cater to their needs. However, there is an easy fix to this, in the form of having a level-access shower installed. By eliminating the needs to step over a threshold, as well as the presence of handrails, life can be made considerably easier. In order to ensure total safety in this type of environment, it is also wise to have a slip-proof chair installed.

Opt For a Lift

Should a member of your family be in a serious condition, and can therefore not use stairs, it can sometimes be difficult to know the best way in which to help them reach the upper floors of the home. This is a problem that is negated when you invest in a through-floor lift; often installed in a living-room or hallway, this is a unit which is excellent for those in wheelchairs, or are paralysed. These sophisticated pieces of equipment will revolutionise the lives of all those in your household.

What Are The Most Popular Mobility Products On The Market?

The market for disability aids has recently become one which is marked by variety, as the number of total options available is excessive. As such, people that are looking to make a purchase have difficult decisions to make, in terms of which unit is poised to provide them with the most assistance. Here at Irish Stairlifts, we have obtained more than twenty years worth of experience in this industry, meaning we are perfectly poised to offer advice on what is best for you. For a comprehensive breakdown of the most popular mobility products in 2020, we ask that you read the thoughts of our team below.

Riser-Recliners

For those individuals that are afflicted with a type of physical disability, it can often be extremely difficult to find a seating position which is comfortable; primarily, this is due to the fact that their bodies are not comfortable in conventional chairs. It is for this reason that there has been a huge spike in popularity in riser-recliners. In essence, these units look to greatly ease the strain on the body when getting in-and-out of an armchair. No longer will you have to exert large amounts of energy – the chair does the hard work for you, meaning that it is one of the most helpful pieces of home-mobility equipment on the market.

Wheelchair Power Drives

Whilst there are some people that are perfectly comfortable in utilising a traditional wheelchair as their primary mobility aid, there is a major drawback associated with these products. Should you not have someone to assist you, in regards to giving a push, you are limited as to how far you can travel. In situations such as these, the powered wheelchair drive is unparalleled in the way in which it can change the way in which you get around. Compatible with any type of wheelchair, it gives disabled people the freedom to go anywhere they want.

Mobility Scooters

If you are someone that lacks the ability to be able to get around unaided, but wishes to retain the ability to go out extensively, the chances are that you would greatly benefit from purchasing a mobility scooter. These pieces of equipment have undergone significant fine-tuning in recent years, and have since become one of the most prominent daily living aids in the country. Thanks to the state-of-the-art batteries that these units are fitted with, they are able to travel significant distances before requiring a recharge.

Travel Scooters

Should you be operating on a restricted budget, or are simply trying to find a product that is easily-portable yet still retains a high-level of aid, look no further than the travel scooter. Although less powerful than the mobility scooter, it still marks a significant improvement upon what are considered to be ‘old-school’ walking aids, such as the walking stick. Their ability to fold up makes them the perfect product for anyone that wishes to put them in the boot of the car, and are ideal should you need something that improves your range of mobility.

WHY DO PEOPLE PURCHASE RECLINER CHAIRS

One of the biggest problems faced by older generations is their mobility, or lack-of; the body is frail, and as the years go by it slowly-but-surely declines in condition. Whilst this is perfectly natural, it does make everyday tasks that little bit more difficult. Even the relatively simple acts of sitting down, and getting back up, can cause major issues. It is for this reason that, here at ISB Mobility, we believe that it is extremely important to invest in a recliner chair. If you are unsure as to whether or not this is the right purchase for you, allow us to elaborate a little more.

Helps blood circulation

For anyone that did not already know, if you spend prolonged periods of time sitting in the same position, it is likely that you will encounter problems with your blood flow. The knock-on effects of this include, but are not limited to, constant weariness, and other health complications. This is a problem which is negated when sitting in a rising-and-reclining chair. This is because of the customisable positions which the chair can be put into, thus changing the position of the body. If you are an older adult that is likely to be confined to a single chair for significant chunks of the day, this may be the product for you.

Better distributes weight

It is typically understood that the older you get, the more likely you are to develop problems related to your muscles and joints. They tend to be painful, no matter if you are standing or sitting – unfortunately, many people accept this as gospel. What people do not realise is that there is a way in which to put these issues behind you, if only temporarily. Most riser-recliner armchairs, for example, are designed so-to better distribute the users weight, which subsequently ensures that the pressure on individual joints is drastically reduced.

More independence

Some people find it embarrassing that every time they wish to get up from a sunken seat, they require assistance from someone. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this, it is understandable that certain individuals would prefer to be able to cope on their own; this is especially true of those people that live by themselves. By investing in a riser-recliner chair, you are able to regain some of the independence that you had when you were younger. It certainly eliminates the need to rely on someone else for help.

Aesthetically pleasing

Whilst this is not an argument in terms of its practicality, it is certainly important to consider how well it will fit into your existing set-up. Thanks to the range of customisable options with these types of mobility chairs, such as the upholstery material which is used, you can be sure that when you purchase one of these products, you will have access to a fashionable and trendy chair. When people walk into the room, their eyes will instantly be drawn to your modern furniture.
